HMRC has issued an alert to UK households
HMRC has issued a crucial message regarding backdated payments. UK households could receive up to £897 annually for each new claim submitted, the Labour Party government’s tax authority has announced.
In a post on Twitter, now X, HMRC said: “You can claim Child Benefit for every child you’re responsible for, regardless of how many children you have. Child Benefit can be backdated for up to 3 months from the date you make the claim.” However, the department warned: “You cannot recover payments from before that period.
“The quickest and easiest way for parents and carers to claim, view and manage Child Benefit payments is by downloading the free and secure HMRC app. Already claiming Child Benefit for your first child? Claim online to get up to £897 a year for each additional child you have.”
Child Benefit is a government payment intended to assist with the expenses of bringing up a child, reports Birmingham Live.
The funding is typically provided to anyone raising a child who is under 16 or under 20 if they continue in approved education or training. Whilst there’s no restriction on how many children you can claim for, only one parent or guardian can receive the Child Benefit for a child.
Presently, there are two Child Benefit rates on offer. For an eldest or only child, the payment is usually £26.05 per week, whilst for extra children, the benefit stands at £17.25 per week. Any Child Benefits received are included in the benefit cap. If you’re impacted by this, you will still get the full payment sum, but other benefits may be cut.
Meanwhile, HMRC warns that if you or your partner’s income exceeds a certain limit, you might not gain any additional funds from the Child Benefit. This is primarily due to the potential need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
