Motorists faced long delays as the bridge
Tyne Bridge closed for hours due to police incident
- The Tyne Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead, was closed in both directions this morning. The A167 was closed for over an hour due to a ‘police incident’
- The closure caused travel chaos, with huge queues building up, particularly through Gateshead and into Newcastle. Several miles of traffic were reported on the A167 and surrounding roads with delays of up to 40 minutes for drivers.
- The Tyne Bridge reopened at around 8.15 am. However significant traffic delays continued throughout the morning.
- Emergency services confirmed that they were called at around 4.42am. Both Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service attended the incident.
- The North East Ambulance Service received a call at 4:42 am and dispatched two ambulance crews, two clinical team leaders, and two crews from the Hazardous Area Response Team. One patient was taken to the hospital for further treatment.
