The tot had been left alone for a “significant period of time”, as temperatures in the Australian town hit 30C. She was taken to hospital but could not be saved

A two-year-old girl died after she was found unresponsive inside a car in a town centre car park.

Emergency services were called to the Cassowary Coast Regional Council chambers carpark in Queensland, Australia yesterday afternoon. They attempted to resuscitate the child and she was rushed to Innisfail Hospital where staff attempted CPR, but she could not be revived.

Now police have revealed they are investigating after they found the tot appeared to have been left alone for a “significant period of time”, as temperatures in the town hit 30C.

Superintendent Mick Searle spoke to media, he said: “It appears the child had been in the vehicle by herself for quite some time and the parents were away from the car at the time the child was found.

“We’re now conducting a very complex and detailed investigation in relation to this matter. We’re being assisted by the family and other specialist police, and that investigation will continue for quite some time.”

The officer added that support was being provided to the family and friends and the local community.

He said: “Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of the people who are involved in this matter.

“It’s also a very difficult time for the first responders who responded to this incident, and the Queensland Police Service is also offering all necessary support to those people.” He said it was tell early to tell if charges would be made.

Cassowary Coast Mayor Teresa Millwood said the death had been an absolute shock to the community. She said: “The Cassowary Coast Regional Council would like to extend our condolences to the family involved and if there’s anything we can do, we are happy to help them.”
