Fire crews were called to Cragside Avenue in North Shields this morning where a massive fire was ripping through a property and now police have confirmed two people have died

A man and a woman have tragically died after a fire ripped through a house in North Tyneside.

Fire crews were called to Cragside Avenue in North Shields shortly after 3.30am this morning to tackle the blaze and helped people from the property but sadly two people could not be saved.

Northumbria Police said a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s were found inside the house and treated by emergency services, but the pair died at the scene.

A man in his 70s was also found inside the house and was taken to hospital for treatment, the force added.

Two neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution, and a cordon remains in place today.

A statement from Northumbria Police reads: “Two people have tragically died following a house fire in North Tyneside. Shortly after 3.30am today, we received a report from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service of a fire at an address on Cragside Avenue in the North Shields area.

“Emergency services attended the scene and a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s were found inside the address. Despite the efforts of responders, both sadly died at the scene. The next of kin for both have been made aware.

“A man in his 70s was also found inside the property – he has been taken to hospital for treatment of injuries. Two neighbouring properties were evacuated as precaution, and a small cordon remains in place. A section of the road remains closed, and officers and will continue to carry out enquiries in the area.”

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Barry McAtominey said: “This is an absolutely devastating incident in which two people have tragically lost their lives. All of our thoughts and condolences are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“Enquiries remain at a very early stage, and with the support of our partners from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service we are determined to establish exactly what happened. We are asking anyone with information – no matter how small or insignificant it may seem – to come forward and share what they know.”

While a Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson previously stated: “We can confirm that earlier today, Wednesday, 1st July, five appliances attended an incident in North Tyneside.

“The emergency call came in to our Control Room team at 03:27 and appliances from our Tynemouth, Byker, South Shields and Gosforth Community Fire Stations were despatched to the North Shields area. The incident involved a fire in a house. Firefighters rescued persons from the property and extinguished the blaze.”

Multiple crews were sent by North East Ambulance Service, reported ChronicleLive. A spokesperson said: “We were called to a fire at a private address in North Shields at 3:32am on Wednesday 01 July. We dispatched three ambulance crews, one rapid response paramedic, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, three HART resources (Hazardous Area Response Team) and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment by road.”
