A TikTok travel expert says she recently found the perfect alternative ‘cosy city break’ to Amsterdam and despite the close proximity, it comes at a fraction of the cost
A budget savvy travel expert has dished out her top tip for a cheaper alternative to the bustling streets of Amsterdam, perfect for those seeking a snug city escape this winter.
TikTok user Em, known by her handle @emsbudgettravel, has been on a mission across Europe to sniff out the most economical adventures, sharing her discoveries with an eager audience of 69,000 followers. In her latest clip, she divulged that she’s ticked off 10 countries this year alone, all on a shoestring budget of a mere £200 “for everything” each time.
Earlier in the year, Em put Athens on the map as a summer hotspot, but now she’s back with another suggestion as the chill of winter creeps in. “My next destination is perfect for a cosy city winter break maybe over a long weekend,” she teased. “If you’ve been wanting to go to Amsterdam but it’s too expensive then this is also a great alternative.”
With the suspense building, Em unveiled Eindhoven as another Netherlands gem. “You can frequently find really cheap flights here from a lot of different airports,” she noted. “It’s quite a bit cheaper than Amsterdam for pretty much everything – food, drink, activities and transport.”
Though it may not match Amsterdam’s size, Em assured that Eindhoven doesn’t skimp on Dutch charm and offers a more “laid back approach” to life. She went on: “It’s very walkable and easy to get around and has loads of cosy cafes.”
Em concluded her travel advice by recommending a trip to Eindhoven, stating it can be “easily combined” with several other locations just across the Belgian border – with Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels are all relatively close by. She also shared pricing details, adding, “I visited Eindhoven a couple of weeks ago and was only paying £36 per night for my half of our four star city centre hotel”, and advised travellers to use Skyscanner to browse low cost flights.
One of Em’s followers responded to her travel tips, saying: “I did this trip back in July! Was so so good.” In a follow-up video, meanwhile, Em provided more details about her trip, revealing she flew Ryanair from Stanstead. After landing in the morning, she spent her first day exploring the city.
On Saturday, she visited a market by the cathedral before heading to the park and on to the Silly Walks Tunnel. She took in the street art in the surrounding area and the Flying Pins attraction – a giant sculpture representing a bowling ball and 10 pins.
