Here’s our complete guide to the highly-anticipated Amazon Prime Day, including our top tips to grab a proper bargain and some common mistakes you should avoid at all costs

Amazon Prime Day is officially back, and better than ever.

The major shopping event (October 8-9) will see Amazon slash prices on hundreds of products, from electricals and gadgets to beauty product. Starting from midnight on the first day, the retailer will also add new deals regularly throughout the 48-hour sale. This is the firm’s biggest sales event and the second Prime Day of the year.

The first, in July, saw a massive £1.3 billion spent online in the UK – up 8.8 per cent year-on-year. And if you’re looking for the best offers in the latest sale, The Mirror has you covered with our top three dos and don’ts – as well as our pick of 10 top deals with 30 per cent off or higher.

Amazon Prime Day – dos and don’ts

DOs

  • Make sure you are signed up to Amazon Prime if you want to take advantage of the deals, as they are only available to members.
This typically costs £8.99 a month, however there is a 30-day free trial option, which you can choose to cancel before it renews.
Students and those aged 18 to 22 can have a trial for six months followed by Prime at half the price.

  • Set a budget. This will help stop you from getting carried away and overspending. It is also worth keeping a list of any items you’re interested in, as prices can fluctuate and go down on Prime Day.
If you’ve previously saved products in your Amazon basket, this is a good time to see if they’ve gone down in price.

  • Check other retailers’ prices before making a purchase.
Amazon will have great deals on Prime Day – but items could still be cheaper at rival stores. It is worth doing a quick Google search or using an online price comparison tool such as Price Runner to ensure you really are paying the lowest price. DONT’s

  • Don’t buy items you don’t need just because they are discounted.
Last year price comparison site idealo found 59 per cent of people said they ended up with a product they didn’t want after Prime Day last year. Katy Phillips, senior brand and communication manager at idealo said: “Just because things are on sale, doesn’t mean you need to buy it. Keep a strict list if there are things you need.”

  • Avoid falling for a scam. Fraudsters may create fake emails or websites that appear to have been sent from or affiliated to Amazon, asking for personal information to download a ‘gift card’ or hosting malicious software that is downloaded to devices by clicking on links. NordVPN’s cybersecurity expert, Marijus Briedis, said: “Consumers should always be cautious of unfamiliar websites, even if they seem associated with Amazon or have the usual branding. Remember, if a deal looks too good to be true, a criminal may be using it to lure you in. For example, you may receive a phishing email from someone claiming to be Amazon offering you the latest iPhone for half the regular retail price. The discount is unrealistic for the latest Apple tech and should be an immediate warning sign.”

  • Don’t forget your rights. Amazon have a 30-day returns guarantee, so if you’re unhappy with your purchase for any reason, you can return it to them in its original condition within 30 days of the date you received the item.If items become defective after 30 days, Amazon will repair the item or replace it. Third-party seller items must be returned to the seller using the shipping label provided by them.
