People have bought giant Tony’s Chocolonely eggs affected by the recall have been urged not to eat them and to return them for a refund – because they could contain ‘unsafe’ pieces of metal

Tony’s Chocolonely have issued an urgent recall of giant Easter eggs over fears they could contain shards of metal.

The Dutch chocolate manufacturer – which brands itself on selling ethically-sourced products – had told customers to check any Large Hollow Easter Egg 242g products they have bought in the Milk Chocolate and Caramel Sea Salt flavours. The affected eggs will have a best before date of June 2025 and certain lot codes. According to an alert from the Food Standards Agency, the affected Easter eggs “may contain pieces of metal” which makes them “unsafe to eat”. It follows another recall earlier this week of several Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate bars, including he Dark Almond Sea Salt chocolate bar, and Everything Bar, over a similar issue involving small pieces of metal.

Which lot codes are affected?

The affected lot codes on the Easter eggs are: L0385D, L0415D, L3244D, L3254D, L3264D, L3274D, L3304D, L3384D, L3394D, L3404D, L3444D, L3454D, L3464D, L3474D.

For the Dark Almond Sea Salt 180g, the affected lot codes are: 162633 – 28 February 2026, 162614 – 28 February 2026, and 163061 – 2 April 2026.

In the recall of Everything Bar 180g, the company said products affected have the lot codes: 4331 – 26 November 2025, 4332 – 27 November 2025, and 4333 – 28 November 2025.

What should I do if I have one of the affected products?

The Food Standards Agency has warned anyone bought any of the above products not to eat them. Instead, you should return them to the store from where they were bought for a refund or replacement. If you bought them directly from Tony’s Chocolonely, you can get in touch with them directly through their UK website.

What has the company said?

A message from Tony’s Chocolonely on its website today said: “Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling certain batches of its Large Hollow Easter Egg 242g product in both Milk Chocolate and Caramel Sea Salt flavours due to the potential presence of metal fragments.

“This recall only affects these specific products with a best before date of June 2025 with certain lot codes. You can check your lot code in our ‘lot code checker’ tool on this page.

“A lot code is a unique identifier assigned to a specific batch or quantity of products manufactured under the same conditions, used for tracking and traceability. It is printed on the side of the packaging underneath the best before date, usually starting with the letter L.

“The rest of the Tony’s Chocolonely Easter range, including all its small eggs and all other Tony’s Chocolonely products are not affected by this issue.

“Do you have an egg with the impacted lot number(s)? Please don’t eat the chocolate. Instead, we kindly ask you that you return the product to the store where you bought it for a refund.”

Following the initial recall of the chocolate bars on Tuesday, a Tony’s Chocolonely spokesperson said: “We are extremely sorry to have to issue this recall, and for the inconvenience that this will cause people who purchased these products.

“Whilst the probability of a product being affected is low, we always put the safety and satisfaction of our consumers first and that is why we have made the decision to recall these products. We apologise to consumers and our partners for the impact this will have.”
