Customers praised Mike’s Traditional Fish and Chips for the quality of its food as well as the value of the meal overall – critics agree and have named it as being among the 40 best chippies in the country
One of Britain’s best fish and chip shops isn’t in a major city but is in fact tucked away in a small UK village.
Home to about 10,000 people, Bishopstoke in Hampshire, is home to picturesque houses in its centre and lovely walks around in the nearby countryside. But the small civil parish is also a foodie’s dream if they are keen to sample what are considered some of the best fish and chips in the whole country.
Mike’s Traditional Fish and Chips has been recognised as one of the UK’s top 20 chippies from between 2020 to 2025. The family-run outlet has been praised for offering great food while being great value for money.

The fish and chip shop currently holds a 4.6 rating out of five on TripAdvisor with the 126 “excellent” reviews praising the quality of the food and friendliness of staff members. Reviewer Samantha W said in her five-star review: “I came here to get my family their dinner. The staff were friendly and the food was nice and fresh. Never have any problems. My go to chippy.”
“I would give Mike’s Traditional Fish and Chips five stars,” said Susan H. “My husband and I have found that Mike’s has the best Fish and Chips around. Friendly staff, nice hot food, good prices and the tastiest fish going. You’d be foolish to give this first class establishment a miss.”
Paul H said in his five-star review: “Best fish and chips in the area. Having tried all our local chippies, we’re happy to drive seven miles each way to enjoy Mike’s as they are a cut above the others.”
While the chippy did not scoop the 2025 national Fish and Chip Awards, it was named in the 40 best in the country by Time Out. The chippy made it down to the the shortlist of 40 after contesting with the estimate 11,000 fish and chip owners across the UK.
According to YouGov, fish and chips is one of the most popular dishes among adults living in the UK with 89 per cent of respondents in the first quarter of 2025 saying they enjoyed it. Baby boomers were the most likely to enjoy fish and chips with 91 per cent of respondents saying they enjoyed it compared to 88 per cent of Gen X and 86 per cent of Millennials.
While many people will head into Bishopstoke to sample one of the country’s best fish and chips, there are several other things visitors can get stuck into should they want to stick around the Hampshire village.
People who arrive could consider exploring the beautiful countryside and walks nearby while sampling the strong sense of community ties among its residents.
