A woman has taken to TikTok to reveal that the small button located on car rear view mirrors actually has a function – and it’s come as a surprise to a lot of people
Drivers have been surprised to discover a hidden feature on the rear view mirrors in their cars – and it could save lives. A viral TikTok video has shed light on the little-known function, and it seems there’s always something new to learn about our vehicles.
The clip, posted by user @chequanxiaoqiao, highlighted the purpose of a small, often-overlooked button on car mirrors. In the video, she explains: “The lights of the rear car are too dazzling when driving at night.
“We just need to press this little wrench under the rear view mirror-you can turn on the anti-glare function.” This little adjustment is designed to reduce glare from the headlights of vehicles behind you – by flipping the lever or pressing the button, you can dim the reflection and make night time driving safer.

The video has racked up hundreds of thousands of views, sparking a flurry of comments. One viewer remarked: “Wait a minute. You mean to tell me there was an anti-glare function all the nights I nearly drove off the road.”
Another added: “Why am I learning this now?” And a third wrote: “This is game changing, I am a cab driver and work all hours so will definitely try it out at night.”
It comes after an expert warned drivers to ‘never do this’ if they ever put the wrong type of fuel in their car.
Alicia Hempsted, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, urged motorists not to start their car, if possible. If you’ve already started it, turn off the ignition straight away.
Alicia said: “Misfuelling is a potentially expensive mistake that can catch drivers out all year around, although recently there has been an increase in online searches for information about what to do if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in your car.
“If it happens to you, it’s important to know how to respond, as misfuelling can seriously damage your car if not dealt with quickly. If possible, don’t start your car. Starting your engine after putting in the wrong fuel can increase repair costs by hundreds or even thousands of pounds.
“If you’ve already started it, switch off the ignition as soon as possible. Move your car to a safe place by putting it into neutral and rolling the vehicle and call your breakdown provider or garage to drain and flush the tank.”
She added: “Misfuelling is not typically covered by car insurance, so it isn’t a mistake to take lightly. In most cases, you will need to add additional misfuelling insurance to your policy to include that protection, although some comprehensive policies may include misfuelling under accidental damage.
“Make sure you check your insurance cover to ensure you have the right protection in place should this happen to you.”
