Breakfast is the most commonly missed meal but there has been an increase in demand for the ‘best breakfast foods for energy’ – and these are the three you should be eating

Breakfast is a divisive meal, much like Marmite. Some people relish it while others avoid it entirely (unless it’s a hotel buffet, in which case all bets are off, right?).

With a significant number of Brits confessing to skipping meals, it’s not shocking that Benenden Health has noticed an uptick in individuals trying to find ways to boost their energy levels. Over the past year, searches for ‘how to stay energised all day’ have surged by 67%.

Interestingly, despite breakfast being the most frequently skipped meal, there has been a 23% increase in demand for the ‘best breakfast foods for energy’. To help stave off that mid-afternoon slump at work, particularly as the darker days encroach earlier, experts at Benenden Health are encouraging people to stop missing meals, sharing the top breakfast foods and pantry staples to naturally enhance energy levels.

What breakfast foods are good for keeping me awake?

According to the expert, whilst it can be tempting to reach for an energy drink and that morning cuppa, foods and drinks high in sugar can cause your blood sugar to raise quickly, triggering a release of too much insulin and causing a sugar crash. Even snacks and sweets – no matter how little you consume – when you are feeling low on energy, can cause the same effect.

“Instead, there are plenty of natural, healthier, and cheaper alternatives you may already have in the house” they warn. So what should you eat?

Bananas

“Bananas are one of the best energy boosters there are and are often regarded as a brain superfood. They are packed with energy-rich carbohydrates, vitamin B6, and potassium. These ingredients help give you a natural sugar hit and replenishes your body’s electrolytes, perfect for hydration and energy.”

Oranges

“Oranges are another fruit that can give you bundles of energy when you are feeling drowsy. They are also a great electrolyte replenisher and, of course, high in vitamin C which boosts fatigue-reducing collagen production.”

Oats

“Finally, an affordable cupboard essential that gives you natural energy throughout the day is oats. There’s a reason that oats are touted as one of the best breakfast foods to start your day. Packed with fibre, oats slowly release glucose into the bloodstream, providing a gradual energy release through the morning. What’s more, your energy levels won’t spike and crash as the oats balance out your blood sugar and leaves you feeling fuller for longer.”

So, if you’re struggling with brain fog, feeling groggy, or lacking concentration throughout the day, then bananas, oranges, and oats are some ideal snack options to try.
