If you’re looking to keep your hairstyle looking fresher for longer between washes, this is the absolute best dry shampoo for the job, says beauty editor Laura Mulley
I find washing my hair a huge inconvenience at the best of times – my hair is long, knotty and takes ages to dry – but when the weather’s cold, I find the prospect of sitting around with damp hair, even for a short time, even less appealing. Luckily, this is where dry shampoo comes in handy – and after testing dozens over the years, I think I’ve found the very best one.
As someone with hair that’s fine, flat and that often goes greasy quickly, dry shampoo is a hair care must-have for me, not just for stretching out washday but also for giving my limp locks a little boost of volume. I use and like plenty, including ones from Batiste, Amika and Olaplex, but the one that I re-buy and recommend over and over again is Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo. Here’s why…

Unlike most, Living Proof’s Dry Shampoo feels like it actually cleans your hair, rather than just masking the grease with powders. The Living Proof brand is all about clinically proven, high-science hair care that really works, and this contains a clever ‘powder removal system’ that soaks up excess oil then whisks these powders away (it should be sprayed on then left for a few minutes before rubbing in). It also neutralises odours rather than just masking them with strong perfumes.
Those with dark hair will also appreciate that this formula doesn’t leave a dusty white finish on your roots, nor does it irritate a sensitive scalp, as some run the risk of doing.
Using Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo means that I can stretch out when I need to wash my hair from two to three days – ideal in this cold weather – and it’s also a must for the gym bag or using after exercising; it won’t completely banish all sweat, but it does make your hair look and feel a little fresher.
One of the smartest new dry shampoos to launch is K18’s Airwash Dry Shampoo, £48, a non-aerosol formula that uses translucent mineral microbeads to mop up oil instead of starchy powders, and which has shoppers calling a “miracle” and “truly impressive”.
And if you’re on a budget, I don’t think you can beat Batiste, if you apply lightly to avoid white marks; it’s under a fiver, often on offer, and comes in lots of different fragrances and even colours.
