No need for a makeover, a simple swap of plain lampshades to something spring-inspired gives a room a refresh – discover our favourites from Dunelm, Argos, H&M and more

The sun in the sky, birdsong on the breeze, daffodils bobbing on in the park – the new season is making us feel all spring-like and hopeful. If you want to give your home the same little pep, here’s a speedy interior designer tip to lift a room with minimal effort and expenditure: change your lampshades.

Swapping out a plain lampshade, whether it’s on a table lamp, a floor lamp or evening a hanging ceiling pendant, for something with a little flower-print power, texture or statement stripes, can change the feel of a whole room, and make a simple lamp look like a new purchase.

According to the lighting experts at Pooky, simply everyone is doing it (darlings), with a noticeable trend this year for uplifting, rather than replacing. They report that searches for “spring refresh” and “upcycle ideas” on the rise, with everyone keen to find quick wins without breaking the bank. And swapping out your shade is one of the easiest ways to transform the look and feel of a room in minutes — think of it as a wardrobe change, but for your lighting. This are some of our spring favourites.

Dunelm Beatrice Stripe Drum Lampshade in Dark Pink and Olive Green, £18

Meanwhile Dunelm is going for a more refined retro vibe, with bold stripes available in six different shades (these are out favourite two). Both remind us of deckchairs on the pier, ideally in bright sunshine with an ice cream in hand. For something a little more statement, we also love their William Morris Loddon Lampshade, £35 (see image, above).

Rowan & Wren Bonnie Cotton Lampshade in Soft blue and Red stripe, £48

We love the retro, frontier-style Americana feel of these gathered fabric lampshades from interiors experts Rowan & Wren. Infused with understated prairie charm, they cast a beautifully soft glow when paired with a lamp with a warm white bulb.

Argos Home Green Floral Lampshade, £18

For a statement, deep green update with bold florals, choose this option available for less than £20 at Argos. At 35cm wide, it looks great over a taller table lamp, or as a hanging pendant.
