Food giant McVities has divided opinions after releasing an unusual Jaffa Cakes flavour inspired to lure young shoppers in. While some shoppers say they’re ‘mega’ – others refuse to even try them
McVities is getting pretty adventurous with its humble Jaffa Cakes.
While the debate will never cease around its biscuit/ cake status, Jaffa Cakes has been a cupboard staple amongst Brits for more than 90 years. The genoise sponge, filled with sweet orange jelly and topped with dark chocolate, goes great with a cuppa or a mid-day pick-me-up.
Its iconic recipe has been tweaked before, with limited-edition releases such as cherry, Blackcurrant, and Raspberry flavours hitting the shelf. However, in an attempt to lure younger shoppers, the food giant has ditched the fruity profiles and released a bizarre new flavour based on one of the UK’s most beloved beverages (and no, it’s not booze).
The Cocla Bottle flavour Jaffa Cakes first launched in Asda back in June for a limited time, but have now been spotted in Tesco stores. Priced at £1.25 for a pack of 10, the vegetarian-friendly snacks will only set you back 12p per cake/biscuit.
McVities MD Adam Woolf said earlier this year the launch was in response to a ‘huge appetite among the next generation of snacking shoppers for something genuinely new and different’. He added: “McVitie’s Jaffa akes Cola Bottle flavour is tailormade for those who’ve got the bottle to branch out and give bold new flavour combinations a go.”

After spotting the bars on social media, swathes of hungry users flocked to the comments section to share the release with their friends and family. “I order them all the time when [I] do a shop. Yummy,” one satisfied user wrote. Another agreed, commenting: “These are mega,” while a third added: “They were pretty decent.”
However, sceptics were also quick to slam the peculiar flavour, with one person fuming: “Noo, keep them just orange flavour please.” Another raged: “Are you kidding me? P*** off. They should be kept orange.” A third added: “I just can’t bring myself to try them.”
