A taxi driver accused of stealing David Lammy’s luggage has been acquitted on all charges.
Nassum Mimun, 40, faced up to three years in prison when he went on trial at Bonneville Criminal Court in eastern France today. He had been accused of taking property belonging to the now-deputy prime minister, 53, and his wife, Nicola Green, 53, earlier this year.
The driver had taken the couple on a 370-mile journey through the Alps in April – and alleged that Lammy had “acted like a thug” after he told him he wanted to be paid. Mimun told The Sun: “When he [Lammy] got out of the vehicle, he said, ‘f***ing French, f***ing French’. I was afraid.”
However, Lammy said he “totally refutes” the claims and said the fare was paid in full.
The judge ruled that there was no proof Mimun “intended to keep the goods”. Mimun, who was banned from driving over the allegations, said he was “delighted” with the news.
He claimed that he did drive off with the couple’s suitcase, he never intentionally left the scene knowing he had their belongings. He said he had decided to go to the police station to make a complaint when the couple refused to pay, and hadn’t realised the luggage was still in his vehicle.
