Brits are also calling for drivers to retake their driving tests at regular intervals, with 18% saying this should happen every 10 years – while one in eight support retesting every 20 years

One third of all Brits believe drivers should have their licences revoked at a certain age.

But surprisingly, the new research also found one in 20 people said this should happen as early as 50-years-old. With the Automated Vehicle Act set to take effect in 2026, around 34% of people who initially thought all drivers aged 70+ should lose their licence also support the idea of allowing older drivers to keep their licence if they have guaranteed access to a safe and reliable self-driving car.

Further findings revealed that 70% of people believe drivers should be required to retake their driving tests at regular intervals, with 18% saying this should happen every 10 years. One in eight Brits support retesting every 20 years and one in 10 advocate for a 30-year interval.

Aidan Rushby, founder and CEO of Carmoola, who were behind the polling, said: “Our recent survey highlights that, despite no current laws mandating it, the majority of Brits believe drivers should be required to retake their tests after a certain number of years to maintain safety on UK roads.

“What stood out most to us was how opinions shifted as we look towards a future with autonomous vehicles, which could be on UK roads as soon as 2026. It’s evident that public attitudes change significantly as technology evolves, potentially offering new mobility options for millions of people across the country.”
