Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl have all announced price cuts across Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips, swede, cabbage, and potatoes for the week leading to Christmas

All of the UK’s major supermarket chains have announced huge promotions on their festive veg lines.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl have all announced price cuts across Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips, swede, cabbage, and potatoes for the week leading to Christmas. Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s promotions see vegetables cut to just 15p starting from today. Morrisons discounts also start today, but vegetables will be priced a little cheaper at 10p.

Starting tomorrow, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, and Asda will introduce their discounts. Lidl will be cutting vegetable prices to 9p, while Asda and Aldi will cut prices to a measly 8p. The offer across all stores will run until Christmas Eve – or as long as stocks last.

Those who want to bag bigger bargains could wait until Christmas Eve, as supermarkets often cut prices to as low as 1p when the store is closing. However, it would be a risk as supermarkets have warned that once the vegetables are gone. If you want to, Tesco is also giving away free carrots at 2,880 of its stores – including its express ones – between now and Christmas Eve. However, this scheme is part of its “Carrots for Rudolph” campaign – and is a fun thing for children, so you won’t get enough carrots for your Christmas dinner.

Reacting to the price cuts, British Growers CEO Jack Ward told The Guardian: “Is that really a cause for celebration? We are giving people a false impression of what’s involved in improving food.

“People ask: ‘If I can buy it for 15p at Christmas, why is it 65p the rest of the year?’ It completely devalues what are superfoods compared to a lot of other things consumed in Christmas week. There’s no denying that consumers like this kind of deep discounting but they have got to understand it comes at a cost.”

Ward added that although retailers lose money by discounting vegetables at Christmas, growers ultimately pay by having to accept lower prices throughout the year. He added, “Let’s not delude ourselves; the [cost of the] promotions are factored in somewhere along the way over the 12 months.”
