It can be hard to afford a decent food shop as a student but people can’t stop talking about a 23-year-old’s weekly haul after they shared a snippet of their purchase on Reddit

Living as a student is certainly not easy, especially during the cost of living crisis. It’s one thing having to deal with energy bills as even making the tiniest mistake with your radiator can impact your monthly bills nowadays.

Not only are household bills getting too much for Brits, but even students are struggling to keep on top of costs and then there’s food to also think about. Now one 23-year-old has stunned Reddit users after sharing an image of their weekly food shop at Tesco. It’s already one of the UK’s largest supermarket chain as it’s famed for its extensive range of groceries and popular loyalty scheme, the Tesco Clubcard, which offers points and discounts.

One student managed a large quantity of food which would last a week and it only cost them £56. In their stash, it includes a bunch of bananas, a couple of red peppers, 12 pack of eggs, orange juice, bag of Quorn, a variety of cheeses, herbs, berries, and avocados.

To really seal the deal, there’s even a packet of Tesco’s Finest Sea Salt and Chardonnay Vinegar crisps.

In the caption, it read: “£56 weekly shop for 23yo student. Will probably last me slightly more than a week!”

Since it was shared, the post garnered under 600 upvotes and hundreds of likes. One wrote: “Incredible work,” while another added: “A very healthy grocery shop!”

A third chimed in: “Looks like you’re gonna make some tasty meals. My mum buys a different growers harvest orange juice and it only has 50% orange juice in it.

“If you don’t care that’s cool but a lot of people seem to have no idea that some juice cartons have not much juice.”

While a fourth commented: “Looks amazing. Only disagreement is on pre-grated cheese. Love the THIS meat alternatives though.”

How to make the most of your food shop?

Meal plan: Decide meals for the week to help keep costs low.

Make a list: Stick to your list to avoid spending money on impulse buys.

Check apps and loyalty schemes: There’s always a good offer on! Own a Tesco Clubcard? Use it.

Go own-brand: Supermarket own-brands are often as good and much cheaper than big brands.

Yellow stickers: Look for discounts later in the day, often mid-morning or early evening.

Shop smart: Don’t fall for end-of-aisle promotions, only grab it if you really need it.

Grab a small basket: A small trolley or basket discourages overbuying.
