Fans of cleaning pro Mrs Hinch have discovered a cheap and effective way of turning your cardboard-like towels back their former fluffy selves – and it’ll only cost you 59p

There’s nothing worse than hopping out of the shower and trying to dry yourself with what feels like sand-paper.

Even if you regularly wash your towels, they can easily stiffen up and come out of the machine looking like cardboard. Using too much detergent is the main culprit behind this, as leftover residue can harden towels and give them that scratchy texture.

Luckily, there is a cheap staple which, when mixed with hot water, can strip out any lingering detergent and restore your towels back to their new, fluffy condition. Plus, you probably already have it lying around in your kitchen.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook Page, one woman explained that her towels were always ‘so stiff and scratchy’ even though she has avoided using fabric conditioner on them for a ‘couple of years’ and uses vinegar every time she pops them in the wash. However, after soaking them in a hot water solution of borax and baking soda (a quarter of a cup each) for a ‘few hours’ they came out looking brand new.

“The towels have definitely come out softer and fluffier,” she said. “I’m planning to strip them once a month from now to try to keep them soft.”

You can pick baking soda from any supermarket for less than a quid. For example, Sainsbury’s is currently selling a 180g tub for just 59p, or you can pick up Dr Oetker’s Bicarbonate of soda Sachets (six x 7g) for £.35 on Amazon Fresh. However, the UK and EU banned borax back in 2019 after ruling the ‘borate’ group of chemicals may be potentially hazardous to health.

You can try washing your towels with hot water and baking soda and it should yield good results. If that doesn’t work, there are some Borax alternatives in the UK which you can buy online. Amazon is selling a three-pack of Dripak Borax Substitute boxes for £6.50 – which works out at £2.17 per 500g tub.
