Looking for a bedside crib for a newborn baby but short on space in your bedroom? I think I’ve found the perfect solution with this sturdy yet space-saving sleeping solution

Official recommendations are that newborn babies sleep in the same room as you until they’re around six months old, so a Moses basket or bedside crib (often also called a next-to-me) is an essential if you’ve got a new little one on the way – however, they can take up quite a lot of space if you’re short on space. As a new mum-to-be, I’ve been on the lookout for one that’s safe and sturdy but will fit in our small bedroom – and I think I’ve found it with this stylish design.

After being surprised by how big some of the bedside cribs were on a recent John Lewis nursery appointment, one did catch our eye: the SnüzPod Studio – we loved its simple, stylish design, but most importantly, it would fit perfectly down the side of our bed. Available in a number of different colours, it costs £149 from Snüz, as well as other retailers such as Boots and Mamas & Papas, which Snüz says works out at approximately 69p per sleep.

Firstly, ignore the crib’s set-up in my photos here as this isn’t its final resting place; currently waiting in my spare room, it will of course be fully made up with a waterproof mattress protector and fitted sheet when the baby comes, and placed away from the radiator and next to my side of the bed.

It took no time at all to build, with all the pieces fitting together perfectly, and we loved the simple Scandi-style design. The bed can be fixed at six different heights to line up with your own mattress height; as ours is high, we fitted it into the highest fixture. Wheels can also be fitted to the base to allow for easy movement between locations in the home; we haven’t attached these as we’ll be keeping it next to the bed (we also have this Moses basket for naps downstairs).

Another useful feature with the SnüzPod Studio (and one that’s fairly common with these next-to-mes) is a zip-down mesh side, allowing for easy access to the baby during the night, for feeding or comforting.

Looks great; good for smaller spaces; very easy to build; sturdy; can be built at different heights; can be wheeled around the home if you wish

Smaller ones might be available; bassinet isn’t removable

For a model with a few more uses, Snüz also does the SnüzPod5 Bedside Crib, which features a rocking base and removable bed. thought this one looked a little too bulky for the tiny gap beside our bed, however, and we wouldn’t use the detachable bassinet, which is why we opted for the Studio instead – and I think this is the perfect choice if you too are short on space.

Other alternatives we saw and considered on our search were the cosy-looking Obaby Bedside Crib, £145 from Dunelm, and the Tutti Bambini CoZee Bedside Crib, currently reduced from £169 to £135.20 at Wayfair.
