Brits have been told to expect icy patches across much of southern England and have been warned to be aware of slippery surfaces on pavements and on stretches of road
Brits are set to wake up to a blanket of snow across many parts of the country with some areas seeing an average of nine inches of snowfall.
Several weather warnings are in place across the country today as temperatures plummeted to as low as -8C in the North West with many other regions seeing the mercury fall below freezing. Met Office forecasters recorded lows of -6C in Glasgow, -2C at Belfast International Airport and a chilly -7C in Sennybridge, in Wales.
The frigid conditions have led to increased snowfall across much of the UK this morning with an average of 9cm of snow being recorded in the Pennines, according to Ventusky. Between 3cm and 12cm is said to have fallen in northern and central Wales with as much as 24cm being recorded in northern Scotland.
The borders will see a light dusting of 2cm with heavier snowfall of about 10cm being recorded in the Highlands. Parts of Cumbria has seen 15cm of snowfall while the North East escapes the worst conditions with an average of 3cm falling in the region.
“First thing, if you are stepping out, you can see where these snow showers are from the Highlands of Scotland, running down the western side, Northern Ireland, [the] Isle of Man seeing some wintry showers and moving in across Liverpool, Cheshire and the far south of Lancashire, the western side of Wales as well,” said Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir.
“Now, towards the south an overhand of cloud, but we’ve lost that rain and snow and those winds remain strong along this east coast as we head through this morning into the afternoon. Any freezing fog patches only lifting slowly through the day as well.”

Yellow snow and ice weather warnings are in place across vast swathes of the country with Brits being told to expect some roads and railways to be affected by adverse conditions. The Met Office said today will be cold with icy stretches to start as well as some freezing fog patches being slow to clear. “There will be plenty of sunny spells with further wintry showers possible in the north and west,” the Met Office said.
It said of tonight’s forecast: “Another cold night to come with a widespread severe frost and ice forming in places. Wintry showers continue in the north and west, but generally dry elsewhere with clear skies.”
