Their songs might be great to listen to – but some have claimed that they could serve a money-saving purpose too

Listening to singers like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Coldplay may be one of the most creative ways you could save up to £100 on your water bills. According to Jukebox Marketing, millions of Brits will be watching their water usage as utility prices continue to rise.

It comes off the back of the average gas and electricity bill rising in recent years due to several global factors. While some are stuck on fixed tariffs, those with a water meter might need to get creative with ways to cut back.

One of the biggest drains of water in the home is when we shower. Data from the company suggests that the average shower lasted 6.7 minutes and cost 21p per shower.

Whilst this may seem like a drop in the ocean, multiple showers over a week can quickly add up. This could rack up even further if there are more people living in the house, too.

Most people could reduce the cost by reducing their daily shower to the length of a single song, which is roughly four minutes long. Thankfully, most of the popular artists loved around the world have a catalogue of tunes you can try.

Coldplay’s anthem Viva la Vida is the perfect example of this, according to Jukebox, as it lasts just over four minutes long. Playing the tune could currently slash £102 a year off your water bill – even more when the prices inevitably go up.

The savings are based on using 76 litres of water per shower rather than 114, saving a minimum of 7p per shower. Over the course of one month, that saving would rise to £4.20 per person, and over the course of a year that would be over £50.

But it’s not just Coldplay that works for this cost-saving tip – there are other four-minute songs to suit all tastes. In a recent poll of 2,000 people sharing their favourite four-minute songs, people named Poker Face and Set Fire To The Rain at the top.

  1. Viva la Vida (4.02 mins) – Coldplay – 15% of the votes
  2. Poker Face (3.57 mins)- Lady Gaga – 14% of the votes
  3. Set Fire to the Rain (4.02 mins) – Adele – 13% of the votes
  4. Wake Me Up (4.07 mins) – Avicii – 12% of the votes
  5. Back for Good (4.02 mins) – Take That – 10% of the votes
  6. Sing (3.55 mins) – Ed Sheeran – 9% of the votes
  7. Love Story (3.56 mins) – Taylor Swift – 9% of the votes
  8. California Girls (3.54 mins) – Katy Perry – 8% of the votes
  9. Somebody that I used to know (4.04 mins) – Gotye – 8% of the votes
  10. Only Girl (3.55 mins) – Rihanna – 8% of the votes

Stephen Jury, from Jukebox Marketing, said: “Cutting down water usage is a great way to save money and be kind to the environment. Shorter showers are just one way you can save water – it’s also worth considering low flow shower heads, which will further bring down the cost and are reasonably priced.”

He added: “There are many water-efficient fixtures you can explore in an effort to save on your water bills. But, as a quick fix, the Coldplay method is a good one.”
