People have been urged to hold off buying their Christmas vegetables until later this week when prices will drop to between 15p and just 8p at various supermarkets – don’t miss out

Shoppers are being encouraged to head to the supermarket this week to snap up vegetables for just 8p, just in time for Christmas. Both Aldi and Lidl are slashing vegetable prices to just 8p from Thursday, December 18, until Christmas Eve.

Aldi’s offer includes potatoes (2kg), brussels sprouts (500g), carrots (1kg), parsnips (500g), red/white cabbage (each), and swede (each). Over at Lidl, you can also bag brussels sprouts (500g), carrots (1kg), potatoes (2kg), parsnips (500g), swede (each), and shallots (300g).

However, they’re not the only supermarkets reducing their prices in store and online from Thursday, as Sainsbury’s will also be offering veg for just 15p. This includes carrots (1kg), brussels sprouts (500g), potatoes (2kg), parsnips (500g), swede, and both red and white cabbage.

According to a statement on Money Saving Expert: “Are you in charge of this year’s Christmas dinner? If so, keep calm and carrot on… the 2025 Christmas veg price war is kicking off.

“So far, three supermarkets – Aldi, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s – have confirmed veg prices will be slashed this week, with Lidl and Aldi currently taking the joint crown, dropping prices to as low as 8p a packet.”

“If past years are anything to go by, once a few supermarkets drop prices, the others will follow suit.

“8p is the cheapest we’ve seen veg pre-Christmas since we started tracking them in 2015, and matches last year’s biggest discount.

“You don’t need to keep your eyes peeled for when the cheap veg will be available, as we’ve listed when you can bag them below, so get ready to par-snip the price of your festive shop.”

One Facebook user commented on the deal, saying: “I feel very smug in December with all my cheap veg, feel slightly less smug on Jan 31 eating my 600,0000,000th bowl of soup.”

They added: “Do it every year though and fill freezer with prepared veg, potatoes and soups.”

Another user chimed in: “The thing to do with the potatoes and turnip and carrots is keep them outside in the cold either a shed or a landing if you live in a flat or greenhouse.”

They continued: “I was still eating my veg in Feb, that’s what the supermarkets do.”

A third user shared their plan: “I’m going to prep and make soup etc. My family is doing veg and I’m cooking the turkey/ham.”

Another grateful user said: “Thanks for the update will hang on till then, no doubt will be freezing some for future use, bonus.”
