Lidl has unveiled its new Halloween range as autumn gets underway, with featured products including tarantula-shaped gummy sweets to mini pizzas, churros and more. But some fans say items look ‘burned’

Lidl’s new Halloween range has caused a stir – with one item in particular leaving shoppers scratching their heads.

The arrival of autumn often propels retailers to stock the shelves with seasonal produce, sweets, snacks and home decor items and budget-friendly icon Lidl is no exception. Recently, popular social media account New Foods UK, which treats its 360K followers to all the latest food releases from supermarkets, high street chains and more, shared a video to Instagram.

The footage contains a video round-up of all the spooky seasonal items shoppers can expect to see rolled out across Lidl stores. Items included Halloween-themed mini pizzas, decorate your own macaron kits, mallow cakes, pumpkin spice squares cereal, and much more.

For the most part, shoppers were delighted by the festive offerings but one item left many unconvinced. Alongside gummy tarantula sweets, ‘spooky rings’ cereal, mini doughnuts and bubblegum flavoured cupcakes were Lidl’s new black chicken nuggets, which come with a sweet and sour dip. They accompanied Lidl’s black churros and black ice cream cones.

Shoppers shared their thoughts in the comments section beneath New Food UK’s post. One said: “The black chicken nuggets [skull emoji, crying laughing emoji]” Another joked: “Ok Halloween is like my favourite season but black coloured food items that aren’t normally black just don’t sit well with me”.

A third penned: “The nuggets I wouldn’t know when [they’re] good or burnt”, while a fourth was uncertain: “I can’t say I’m sure about those black nuggets…”

Another shopper commented: “Okay, it all looks amazing BUT those black nuggets fully look burned! I can’t be the only one thinking it? If I was given those at a Halloween party, I’d think it was a trick not a treat [crying laughing emoji]”.

And another tagged a friend and asked: “black chicken nuggets for the party?” adding a crying laughing emoji.

Many shoppers just tagged their friends to alert them to the post, while others were very keen to visit their local store so they could try the range for themselves. One intrigued shopper tagged a friend and said: “might have to pop in here”, while another told a friend: “lil shopping trip for us”.

Another was nervous they might miss out on the range and said: “I always see these videos then go and never find this food ha”, while another food fan simply added: “The best time of year.”
