Heartbreaking tributes have been paid to a “selfless” mum-of-two who tragically died during routine surgery.
Jane Neasham was just 41-years-old when she sadly passed away following an operation to remove her gallbladder at University Hospital North Durham on December 18. She leaves behind her devastated husband Michael and two teenage girls Delilah, 15, and Emmy, 13.
The much-loved mum cared about her community and took a campaigning role at St Leonard’s Catholic School in Durham, which had some of the worst crumbling RAAC in its buildings. Jane took an active role in by meeting with politicians, setting up WhatsApp groups and getting answers for parents.
After meeting her local MP and the now-Education Secretary Bridget Philipson to discuss the issues, Jane’s daughter Emmy recalled how impressed they were with her. “One time when I was at school a teacher came over who was in a meeting and she said to me “You need to tell your mum to do more stuff like that, she was amazing!”.
Jane’s devastated brother Mark, 43, said she was the most “selfless” person you could meet, he told the Echo: “We’d all played pool with Jane the night before and had a wonderful time. S
“He’d already wrapped all of her Christmas presents. She was just a remarkably kind, selfless person – I can’t imagine anyone more selfless actually. The thing she couldn’t stand more than anything in the world was unfairness and injustice.
“From being a little girl, she just could not stand the idea of something not being fair. There’s just a huge void. When someone is that kind, you sort of take it for granted.”
Jame was teacher who taught Humanities at schools across County Durham and moved to the UAE in 2018 with her husband Michael, before returning to the UK in 2021. She recently worked as an education policy officer at Durham University, since May 2023.
Her sister Claire Wilson, 45, said: “Jane was such a kind-hearted, generous, wonderful human and sister, but above all friend. It’s impossible to express how devastating it is to lose her.”
