Cleaning enthusiasts are raving about a cheap but powerful hack to banish stubborn soap scum from your shower screen and tiles – without the hassle of scrubbing. The key is to act as soon as you step out of a steaming shower

Keep your shower sparkling clean and streak-free with this powerful duo.

Your coconut body gel and fancy hair care products may make you feel fresh and clean but they can quickly build up on your shower screens and in the corner of your bathroom tiles. This film-like substance can smear glass and is sometimes mistaken for mould due or limescale due to its unsightly colour. It can also be a nightmare to come off, even with the use of powerful cleaning products. Luckily, there is an easy way to melt away the gunk and stop it from returning. But, you must act as soon as you step out of the steaming shower.

Commenting a Reddit thread dedicated to ‘secret cleaning hacks and tricks’, user GirlWhoWeighted revealed how she keeps a bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water, with ‘several tablespoons’ of washing up liquid in her shower. “After a shower when everything’s on nice and hot and soft, spray it down with that stuff wait a few minutes then soap scum pretty much just wipes right off,” she added, according to the Express. “I just squirt in a really generous amount.”

Other users also hailed white vinegar for its scum-busting properties, with many saying the hack ‘works great’ with ‘minimal effort’ as you don’t need to scrub. Many warned cleaning enthusiasts not to pour boiling water to ‘melt’ the gunk away – or risk ending up with an expensive bill. In fact, one person claimed their shower door ‘shattered’ after trying the hack they saw online.

You can pick up both cleaning items from your nearest supermarket or general store for a couple of quid. White vinegar can be brought for as little as 35p from Morrisons, while washing up liquid costs just 62p from the retailer, currently price matched with Aldi and Lidl.

You can also use white vinegar to melt away limescale from your taps, shower heads and kettle due to its acidic nature. For those tricky to reach places, you can soak a piece of kitchen towel in the natural cleaner and wrap it around the appliance – allowing it to work its magic overnight. Then, just rinse the affected area well to get rid of the strong scent. To prevent soap scum and water marks marring your shower screens, it’s also worth investing in a squeegee and wiping down the glass after each use. These can be picked up at a slew of retailers including Dunelm for as little as 80p.
