The bank is offering the extra cash to some customers – but there are strict eligibility rules

Santander is offering people across Britain a free cash bonus payment of £200 – but only if they’re prepared to switch their banking from a high street competitor. These promotions appear regularly as banks seek to grow their customer base throughout the UK.

Santander has 14 million active UK customers, with seven million customers who bank online exclusively. Both new and existing customers could potentially receive this £200 reward after transferring their current account via the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) to a Santander Edge account.

People would need to make sure that they meet the criteria for the offer before making any significant financial moves. The promotion was flagged by Martin Lewis ‘ MoneySaving Expert team online as one of the leading switching offers currently available (at the time of writing).

The MSE page states: “For a £3/month fee, the Edge current account pays one per cent back on energy, council tax, broadband, TV, mobile & water bills (max £10/mth), making it a top bills (or joint bills) account.

“The Edge Saver pays six per cent on up to £4,000 for the first year – maxed out, that’s around £240/year interest. Plus, the Edge debit card also has no foreign exchange fee when you spend abroad, so you get the same near-perfect exchange rate as the bank does.”

Following confirmation of eligibility, the £200 payment will be transferred directly into your Santander account within 30 days. The bonus won’t arrive in time for Christmas, reports the Express.

Nevertheless, it could be credited to the account during the New Year if people complete the switch promptly. Santander has issued a warning that its £200 switching incentive is only on the table for a “limited time” and could be pulled without notice.

Who qualifies for the bonus?

Applicants need to put in a switching request while the promotion remains live. As of December 9, 2025, the deal remains available.

Would-be customers have a 60-day window from their request date to finalise the switch. And, the account needs to have a minimum of two active selected household Direct Debits set up, alongside a £1,500 payment into the account. Eligible Direct Debits can cover household expenses, including council tax, utility bills, or broadband services.

The offer won’t be available to anyone whose name appears on a Santander current account opened at any stage during this calendar year (from January 1, 2025 onwards). Those who’ve previously pocketed a switching incentive from Santander are also excluded from this £200 promotion.

Meanwhile, in related banking news, Lloyds is running a similar £200 scheme (current as of December 9) – further information is available here. Barclays is also offering £200 for those opening a standard Barclays Bank Account, or a more generous £400 when customers opt for a Premier Current Account.

For those weighing up these types of deals, it’s worth remembering that switching banks for a financial incentive only makes sense if the new account’s advantages (including the cash reward, improved interest rates, or reduced charges) justify the effort involved – particularly if you’re dissatisfied with your existing bank. People should also consider their options before making major decisions and never switch solely for the bonus alone.

Brits should ensure that the account caters to their long-term needs and they ought to thoroughly check all the terms of the new agreement they’re entering into. It’s best to steer clear of any account switches just prior to significant credit applications, like securing a mortgage.
