People should be aware of a rule that applies when trying to add to their account
Santander customers need to be aware of a specific cash rule that affects all account holders. When paying money into the bank, there’s a threshold that cannot be exceeded, with separate rules for cash and cheques.
With banks frequently having limited staff and resources, self-service alternatives have made certain tasks easier and quicker. One such job allows customers to deposit cash directly into their accounts using ATM-style machines at branches that count and collect notes without requiring them to queue for help.
In total, Santander has around 350 branches across the country, and these have self-service machines with a strict limit of £2,000 on the maximum deposit sum. Account holders can get around this restriction by visiting the bank counter, where staff can process larger cash amounts.
Detailing the rules on its website, a Santander spokesperson said: “The maximum cash deposit limit across Post Office and Santander cash machines is £2,000 per day or £10,000 in a rolling 12-month period. If you wish to pay more cash, you can do this at our branch counters.
“You can deposit up to 100 notes at a time. You can easily deposit money at one of our cash machines by inserting your card and entering your PIN.”
How to make a cash deposit with Santander’s self-service machines
- Choose ‘Cash Deposit’
- Select your account
- Get your notes ready and when you’re ready click ‘I’m ready now’
- Insert the notes
- Press ‘Confirm total’
- Choose your receipt option
To help avoid issues when depositing cash at one of these machines, customers are told to make sure two other rules are being followed. People should make sure their notes are landscape when inserting them and avoid using paper clips or rubber bands to keep notes together, as this will potentially damage the machine, as well as lead to errors when counting notes.
Cheque deposits can be made via the mobile app (up to £5,000/day), at Santander branch counters, or at designated ATMs (up to 30 cheques at once) using a debit card and PIN. People can also deposit cheques at Post Office branches using a personalised paying-in slip and envelope.
Santander claims to have “over 1,600 cash machines in the UK”. People can find their nearest cash machine by using the free Santander branch locator online.
Recently, Santander announced changes that will see the closure of 44 branches, which will be replaced by ‘Community Bankers’ providing ongoing face-to-face support. A spokesperson for Santander UK, said: “In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers.
“We will continue to invest in both our branch network – comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us.”
