Greater Manchester Police says a crossbow was also recovered amid the force’s investigation on Romney Street in Salford, which was on lockdown late on Monday night
Six teenagers have been arrested in connection with a disturbance which allegedly saw a gun aimed at residents.
Part of an estate in Salford, Greater Manchester, was on lockdown on Monday night, and a police helicopter was seen circling the area. This was part of a “rapid response” which police say stopped a “dangerous incident from occurring”. The force say a “gun had been seen during a disturbance” near the Pendleton part of the city.
And officers recovered a crossbow from the scene after putting up a large cordon on Romney Street. Their investigation led to the arrests of seven people, including six teenagers, aged 16 to 18, on suspicion of affray.
But, as some residents were reportedly asked to evacuate their homes on Monday, angst remains in the community this morning. Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “We understand an incident of this nature will cause alarm, and we encourage anyone with concerns to speak with a neighbourhood officer; they are there to help.”
Specialist officers were seen by concerned residents as Greater Manchester Police opened an extensive operation. It also led to the arrest 54-year-old man, detained on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.
A dispersal order was authorised contrary to section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. The order extends over a 24-hour period, starting at 10.47pm on Monday, and covers Cheetham Street West, Littleton Road, Poppy Lane, Langley Road South, and Lissadel Street. These additional policing powers enable officers to direct anyone in this area to leave and not return for the specified period to prevent further disorder.
Det Supt Moyles added: “Our frontline officer’s rapid response to a concerning report prevented what could have been a dangerous incident from occurring. There was a large group of youths gathering in the area, and officers intervened in fights and helped several young people return home safely. Thankfully, no one at the scene required medical treatment.
“Our investigation is moving at a pace; we have arrested seven people and taken a weapon off the streets while enquiries are ongoing. A police presence will remain in the area as we conduct enquiries and gather evidence. Neighbourhood officers will be patrolling around to provide reassurance to the local community. If you have any information to support our investigation, call 101, quoting log 3631 – 14/04/2025 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” Anyone with concerns can talk to a neighbourhood officer using the Greater Manchester Police website, the force continued.
The police cordon was erected on Romney Street and Littleton Road, which are residential streets near the River Irwell. Multiple ambulances also raced to the scene on Monday evening.
