A Sainsbury’s shopper has shared what items he gets for him and his wife to last them over two weeks, and it’s left others baffled by the price they spent on it all
With the increasing cost of living that’s been bringing price increases to most items, many of us are keen to stretch our budgets during the weekly food shop, making it crucial to feel we’re securing proper bang for our buck.
While Sainsbury’s is not know for being one of the cheapest supermarkets in the UK, as Lidl or Aldi usually take turns being crowned the cheapest one, it can still be cheaper than you think to do your food shop at this supermarket. Taking to Reddit, one Sainsbury’s shopper shared a photo of their two week shop at the supermarket, and the price has left others floored.
In the photo shared in the post, all of the groceries were placed out on a wooden surface. It included two packs of eight pork loin steaks, two packs of two lamb leg steaks, a pack of 12 pork chipolatas, three tins of sardines, one pack of chicken breast fillets, one pack of chicken legs, eight packs of two salmon fillets.
For the fruit and veggies, they had six large bags of potatoes, carrots, onions, lemons, apples, pears, grapes, cherries, kiwis, persimmons, two cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, green beans, rocket, beansprouts, and a bag of frozen berry mix.
The shopping also included cashew nuts, red lentils, chana dal, Greek yoghurt, double cream, olive oil, ghee, Gold Top Milk, butter, halloumi, cheese slices, paper towels, and washing up liquid.
The user then went on to share how much the shop had cost them, and it’s left people floored.
“Sainsbury’s – 2 weekly shop – 2 people – £168.25,” they revealed in the post. They then added: “This usually lasts around 2 weeks combined with occasional Tesco Express runs.”
People quickly took to the comment section to question what meals could be done with these items, as they claimed it was mainly ‘meat and potatoes’.
“What are these meals? That’s a LOT of potato and salmon!!!” one person said, while someone else commented: “What’s for dinner tonight? ….salmon and potatoes…..AGAIN.”
To this, someone else pointed out the different meals you could make, saying: “Chicken and roast potatoes and gravy, pork chops and mashed potatoes. A hearty stew, a hotpot, shepherds pie. Its Britain and its winter if you can’t come up with 10 different ways to do meat and potatoes and it feel different that’s on you.”
The original poster then also took to the comment section to answer question, saying he and his partner weren’t bodybuilders per say, but do go to the gym four times a week and try to eat a lot of protein and avoid added sugar and processed food.
“My wife is really creative in the kitchen and never fails to keep it interesting,” he said. “Every now and then we switch things up with sweet potatoes.”
People also praised the price of the shop, as another user commented: “I don’t understand what the gripes are about, for one looks like a decently healthy and priced shop, and if somethings yummy and nutritious I could happily eat it all week.”
“Good value for money there is a lot of meat for that price,” a second person said, while someone else wrote: “Finally a proper 2 week haul that isn’t a load of nonsense. Looks like good proper meals for a decent price.”
