Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade is warning the public to be cautious over the coming days as big waves and strong rip currents are expected along the coastline
A crucial safety alert has been issued following several serious incidents along parts of the UK coastline.
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) is urging the public to exercise extreme caution over the coming days as large waves are anticipated to batter the shoreline.
Powerful rip currents are expected to pose a significant danger across numerous beaches in North Tyneside, the TVLB has warned, prompting the charity to issue an urgent water safety alert, reports Chronicle Live.
In a statement shared on social media, a spokesperson for the charity said: “This year, we have had a number of serious incidents where people have nearly drowned due to being caught in a rip current and one very unfortunate drowning at Longsands beach where a non swimmer got pulled out to sea.
“Please be aware of the conditions, and if you’re not sure or you’re not comfortable, please don’t go in.”
The TVLB has highlighted that on December 29, the wave period is predicted by @surfline_uk to reach approximately 13 seconds during morning hours, making it a critical window to assess conditions before venturing into the water, particularly for sea dippers and swimmers.
Those who find themselves trapped in a rip current are advised to attempt swimming parallel to the shore to break free. If that proves impossible, ‘float to live’ and call out for assistance.
The TVLB will be hosting a drop-in water safety clinic on Saturday 3rd January at King Edwards Bay from sunrise, where members of the public are welcome to attend and raise any water safety concerns. If you spot anyone struggling in the water, please refrain from attempting a rescue – dial 999 and request the Coastguard.
