Wrexham, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, will face Ed Sheeran’s Ipswich Town in their next Championship match
Ryan Reynolds and Ed Sheeran are set to lock horns as Wrexham prepare to face Ipswich Town. The Red Dragons, owned by Deadpool star Reynolds and fellow actor Rob Mac, will make the journey to Portman Road on Saturday as their Championship campaign resumes after the international break.
Phil Parkinson’s side are currently 13th in the table, four points off the play-offs, as they chase an astonishing fourth successive promotion. Meanwhile, Ipswich are 7th in the standings as they aim to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
Sheeran is a lifelong supporter of the Tractor Boys and acquired a minority stake in the club in August last year. The pop sensation has already sent a cheeky, expletive-filled message to Reynolds ahead of his team’s clash with Wrexham.
In a video shared by Reynolds on social media at the end of April, Sheeran can be seen addressing the Canadian from the stage during the Time100 Gala in New York.
In the footage captured shortly before Wrexham climbed out of League One, Sheeran said: “Ryan, I think Wrexham are going to get promoted and we’re going to see each other next season. We’ll f*** you up. We will, I’m telling you.”

Reynolds, who was in the crowd alongside wife Blake Lively, initially blows a kiss and crosses his fingers when his cherished side’s promotion prospects are mentioned. However, he then feigns irritation upon hearing Sheeran’s warning, playfully dismissing his remarks with a wave.
Ipswich are among the contenders for promotion from the Championship this season, despite Kieran McKenna’s men having a challenging start to the campaign. Wrexham didn’t have it all their own way either early on this term, but are still in with a chance of going up.
Reynolds and Mac have made no secret of their aim of taking the Welsh side into the Premier League.
Speaking after their last promotion in April, Reynolds said: “Four years ago, this man [Mac] said our goal is to make it to the Premier League. There was understandably a lot of titters, laughter and giggles – but it’s starting to feel like a tangible thing that could actually come to fruition.”
Wrexham spent £33million on new players in the summer as they prepared for life in the second tier. Their manager is expected to be well-backed again in January as they look to improve on their current mid-table position.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes this season could be the perfect chance for Wrexham to reach the top flight as well, with the likes of Southampton and Leicester failing to pull up trees. However, the ex-Wolves striker has cautioned the club’s co-owners against overspending in the winter transfer window.
Speaking to JeffBet, Goodman said: “What you are seeing at the minute is loads of teams that are evenly matched and that gives a real opportunity. It could be that Wrexham might not get a better opportunity.
“With that in mind, I think there probably will be money available in January, if necessary. Their summer recruitment was massive in terms of Championship experience and quantity, a lot of new players came in.
“If they go and spend money in January, I would expect it to be quality over quantity. I would expect maybe it would be a couple of players brought in that would go straight into the starting eleven and improve them rather than players brought in for the squad.”
He added: “I don’t know whether financial fair play will kick in and play a part so they’ll have to really be careful and get some out before getting some in. But I would expect them to have a go.”
