Prisoners at HMP Standford Hill have been using allowed trips outside the grounds to smuggle illicit materials including drugs, phones, and even takeaway food back into behind bars
Prisoners doing porridge have been sneaking takeaway grub back to their cells.
Lags are so sick of the food that they are using local restaurants to get meals which can be microwaved on each wing. Some of the 464 inmates at category D HMP Standford Hill, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, are released on temporary licences to visit the local town, work or have “resettlement” trips home.
The prison’s Independent Monitoring Board said: “A whole range of illicit items has been found in the prison. These include takeaway food, alcohol, drugs of all categories and mobile phones.
“Over 100 prisoners work outside the prison every day and return every evening.”
The prison has no facilities to cook on a mass catering basis and its grub is made at nearby HMP Swaleside.
