If it’s good enough for the Princess of Wales, it’s good enough for us!
Kate Middleton stepped out looking as radiant as ever for a night at the Royal Albert Hall to attend the 2025 Royal Variety Performance in November. For the special occasion, the Princess wore an understated yet elegant emerald velvet gown by designer brand Talbot Runhof, which was styled with a matching pair of green court heels, extravagant diamond earrings and a coordinating silver clutch bag.
The fabric effortlessly draped around Kate’s figure before flaring out into a mermaid-style skirt that skimmed the floor. The sophisticated sleeves made sure she followed royal outfit protocols by appropriately covering her shoulders, but still the overall look embraced the festive time of year and oozed confidence. In fact, it’s the only look we want to copy this party season!
It was revealed in People that the gown took over two years to create. Despite this, the designer, Adrian Runhof, only found out that the Princess of Wales would be sporting the look at the event 30 minutes before she stepped onto the red carpet. We imagine that was one exciting phone call.
Now, with New Year’s Eve fast approaching, could this be the inspiration to help you find a last-minute outfit for a party of a formal gathering? As ever with Kate’s wonderful ensembles, this immediately filled us with style envy and inspiration, and thankfully for you and us, we have located some stunning, affordable alternatives to the £1,480 gown.
The first option is Quiz’s Bottle Green Velvet Wrap Midaxi Dress, which retails for £44.99. This is a great option for New Year’s Eve celebrations, as it not only features a velvet finish like Kate’s but also comes with a flattering wrap-front design and gold buckle detail, allowing you to accessorise accordingly.
The next is Club L London’s Candela Bottle Green Velvet Asymmetric Bardot Maxi Dress, costing only £75. This look is very similar to the Princess’ in terms of the shoulder details, fitted and flare silhouette, and maxi length. This would be an excellent choice if you find yourself attending a more formal party.
Better yet, the design is timeless, so it can be easily re-worn to any future event. Top tip: If you want to change the dress up, you can simply have it tailored and the length shortened.
Another favourite option of ours is Love & Roses Green Velvet Flute Sleeve Midi Dress, a steal at £64. While the silhouette is different to Kate’s, with its 3/4 sleeves and pleated skirt, it’s very reminiscent of another gown the Princess has worn previously, the Vampire’s Wife ‘The Falconetti’ metallic dress in Emerald Green.
So, the next time you’re in a rush and aren’t sure what to wear for a festive gathering, look no further than Kate’s green velvet recipe for success.
