A royal expert has claimed that, while a reunion between the King and Prince Harry could be on the cards, it could be a completely different story when trying to mend the rift between Harry and William
Peace talks between King Charles and Prince Harry are reportedly underway, and while many are hoping for a reconciliation within the royal family, a royal commentator has claimed that while a reunion between Charles and Harry could be on the cards, it may be a lot harder for the Duke of Sussex to mend the rift with his brother, Prince William.
News of the potential reconciliation came just last week, when talks were held between Prince Harry ’s chief communications officer, Meredith Maines, and King Charles’s communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae. The Sussexes’ PR representative in the UK, Liam Maguire, was also present for the meeting in London, which took place just moments away from Clarence House.
Prince Harry has recently made public his desire to bury the hatchet with his family, saying in a tell-all interview with the BBC in May that he “would love a reconciliation” with the King and Prince William, as he admitted that he was tired of fighting, and he worried about Charles’ health because he did “not know how much longer [his] father has.”
While many are holding out hope that King Charles and Prince Harry will reunite after years of their tumultuous relationship seemingly seeing no end, one royal commentator is less convinced of a harmonious reunion between Prince Harry and his older brother, Prince William.
Royal biographer Hugo Vickers said that while there is definitely hope for the Duke of Sussex to mend his relationship with his father, there could be a lot more work required to patch things up with William, after public comments made about both William and Kate have had a lasting impact.
Vickers told The Sun : “So as for William. It’s much more difficult because the barbs were sent in his direction from Prince Harry, but very much directed towards Catherine. That is very insulting, and I think William is likely to be more of an unforgiving person than his father.”
The comments in question largely came from Harry’s memoir Spare, in which he recalled several moments of opposition between Princess Kate and Meghan Markle. In the autobiography, Harry made allegations towards Kate that she had made Meghan cry over an issue with Princess Charlotte’s dress for Harry and Meghan’s wedding.
He also wrote that Princess Kate had been “forced to compete” with Meghan in the eyes of the press, putting a huge strain on the relationship between the two women, and in turn, Prince Harry and Prince William.
Mr Vickers added: “I think at the moment, if I was advising Prince Harry, I would say, get onto good terms with your father as soon as possible, and then that’s step one and step two, try to get on good terms with your brother.”
Prince Harry is next due to visit the UK in September, which could mean the first time meeting his father in 18 months if the talks of a reunion are to come to fruition.
While it remains unclear who made the first move between the estranged father and son to make amends via their communications teams, the meeting is being hailed as the clearest sign yet that both camps are keen to bury the hatchet after years of explosive interviews and family heartache.
