The Prince of Wales and his accompanying equerry were seen enjoying one sing in particular ahead of watching the national team make it through by the skin of their teeth in England

Prince William couldn’t help but laugh when he spotted a cheeky handmade sign at England’s Euro quarter-final match against Switzerland.

The royal jetted out to Dusseldorf, Germany, to watch the national team take on the Swiss national team, with Trent Alexander-Arnold firing home the winning penalty to set up a semi-final against Netherlands. However, it was William’s reaction to one sign held up by fans that put a cheesy grin on his face.

William, an avid football fan and president of the FA, was seen with his equerry when he spotted the sign that read “God save the Cheese”. The sign was cause for laughter from the royal dad-of-three as well as his royal aid. His smile didn’t last long as he resided into his seat for the match, which eventually went all the way to penalties, as Bukayo Saka’s long range strike cancelled out Breel Embolo’s opener.

The Prince of Wales hasn’t made the journey to Germany much this summer, and was last seen watching his country when they took on Denmark in the group stages. He was seen catching up with friend and fellow royal King Frederik, with the Danish monarch being joined by his youngest daughter, Princess Joesphine. Despite the pair being rivals for the match last month, they were seen laughing together at the match in Frankfurt.

According to one lip reader, the monarch compared watching the Three Lions to watching his boyhood club, Aston Villa. Lip reader Nicola Hickling has told the Mirror the Prince was feeling the pressure way before the Three Lions stepped up to take their penalties. During the game the Prince said to a nearby pal: “That’s not ideal.” The man responded: “I feel drained after that.” The Prince replied: “I feel that way when we watch Aston Villa.”

Earlier, an expert had claimed was showing “angst” even ahead of kick off in Germany, which finally ended 1-1 after extra time before going to the dreaded penalty shootout. Body language expert Judi James told the Mirror: “There were some moments before the game started some of the angst and frustration of the England team’s last few games seemed reflected in William’s facial expression, with some lip-pursing, clenched teeth and a furrow-browed frown.

William has had a busy week after he joined his dad, King Charles, in Scotland for a number of festivities that’s traditionally known as ‘Royals Week’, One of the events that takes place is a meeting of the Order of the Thistle, an order of chivalry associated with Scotland.
