Prince William revealed that eldest son George has taken a liking to an incredibly tough sport as he follows in his parents’ footsteps – and it’s not for the faint-hearted

It’s no secret that Prince William and Princess Kate are incredibly sporty – something they have passed on to their three children.

And now Prince George has picked up a seriously tough new hobby that only the fittest athletes can take part in. Proud dad William revealed all in November 2023 as he took part in an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. Among those receiving an MBE on the day was former triathlon champion Non Stanford. And she said that the future king had revealed that Prince George has really taken a liking to the swim-cycle-run event.

Non, who won the women’s world triathlon title in 2013 and finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, later shared: said: “He was telling me how George has been doing triathlon at school. “There is also a gentleman who now works for William, has done a bit of triathlon and has been giving George advice about putting talcum powder in his shoes. George has been sharing his talc with his classmates and they are all excited about these tips. He (William) also asked about the future of triathlon and the talent that is coming through, so we had a very nice chat.”

Talcum powder is used sparingly among athletes in their bike and running shoes to help slip their feet in more easily and reduce the chance of rubbing. The young Prince is known to love sports as a whole – and he’s perfectly placed to try all manner of activities at Lambrook School in Berkshire.

Lambrook highlights sports as part of the curriculum, and the campus includes an all-weather surface cricket, football, netball, and hockey pitches, a sports hall, a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, dance studio, and a nine-hole golf course. It’s no surprise that all three Wales children are sporty. Both their parents enjoy staying active and believe it’s important for youngsters to take part in a variety of games.

During an appearance on The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby podcast, William and Kate spoke about the life lesson they hope George, Charlotte and Louis will learn along the way. William noted: “Learning to lose, which I think we’ve got to concentrate more on nowadays. I think people don’t know how to lose well. Talking about our children particularly, I want to make sure they understand that.”

He continued: “‘I think it’s really important from a young age to understand how to lose, and why we lose, and to grow from it and what you learn from that process. But also to win well, and not boast. There’s so many life lessons that help us all through life, in friendship building, in relationship building, workplace, that you gain from those early years of playing team sport.”
