Emergency services, including an ambulance, remain in attendance near Prestwick Airport in Glasgow following the light aircraft crash believed to have happened at around 4pm

Two people were on board a light aircraft which has crashed near Prestwick Airport on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Police said the crash happened at about 4:10pm. Emergency services, including an ambulance, remain in attendance.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said “Around 4.10pm on Tues 23rd April 24, we received a report that a small aircraft with two people on board had crashed in Monkton.”

The coastguard helicopter landed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Govan, Glasgow, coming from the area with the air ambulance behind, it is understood. The A719 is closed near the B739. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

The Mirror contacted Prestwick Airport, which said Police Scotland is leading the operation. The collision happened near, and not at, the airport so scheduled departures and arrivals are thought to be unaffected. Passengers should check with the airport and airline before their journey however.

Glasgow Prestwick is Scotland’s fifth-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, largely due to the use of low-cost carriers, particularly Ryanair, which uses the airport as an operating base.
