Premier League club invites Nigel Farage to visit just days after Ipswich Town controversy

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage was pictured at the home of Championship side Ipswich Town earlier this week and it appears that he could be on the way to a Premier League side

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has apparently been invited to Sunderland after controversially visiting Ipswich Town. The divisive political figure shared a number of pictures of him at the Championship side’s Portman Road home earlier this week.

That was met with huge criticism from supporters, as well as local media. But it appears that Farage’s football-themed visits aren’t quite over yet.

The 61-year-old has revealed that he has been invited to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light for a future game. Speaking to ITV News, he said: “I’ve been talking to one of the directors, and they’d very much like to see me there for a home game. If I can make it, I will.”

Sunderland are in the middle of an eye-catching season, having only won promotion to the Premier League last summer. The Black Cats currently sit 11th on 43 points with seven games of the season remaining.

Ipswich, who are gunning to join Sunderland in the top flight next season, offered clarification behind Farage’s visit. A statement from the Championship side read: “Ipswich Town Football Club has, over several years, hosted representatives from a range of political parties.

“The club remains apolitical and does not support or endorse any individual or party. The club will continue to engage with representatives from across the political spectrum as part of its role within the community.

“Ipswich Town is proud to be an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming organisation that supports all members of the local and wider community. This commitment remains unchanged.”

Meanwhile, the Ipswich Town Supporters Club have confirmed a number of fans have been in touch to share their verdicts. A statement read: “We want to thank all the fans who have taken the time to reach out recently and share their views on the recent visit from a political figure.

“As part of our constitution, we are here to represent the views of the fans directly to the football club and to help the football club to respond to fans in a way that supports mutual respect and understanding.”

During Farage’s visit, he was pictured both in the dressing room and pitchside, and was seen smiling with a ‘Farage 10’ Ipswich shirt. The Clacton MP was previously at the heart of a Reform UK campaign as they launched their own line of football shirts, which shared the party’s colour and also had Farage’s name across the back.
