The Brighton branch on Duke Street will close soon, although the official date has not yet been confirmed. However, customers cannot book beyond May 10 on the Browns website
A popular restaurant chain has confirmed that it will be closing one of its sites in a blow to fans. The beloved restaurant chain Browns will be closing its first ever branch in Brighton, which first opened over 50 years ago.
The brasserie and bar chain is known for its traditional British menu, alongside its breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas, and traditional Sunday roasts.
The Brighton branch on Duke Street will close soon, although the official date has not yet been confirmed. However, customers cannot book beyond May 10 on the Browns website.
The restaurant’s manager confirmed the closure news in a post on its TripAdvisor page this week. The post read: “Yes, it’s sad news for all of our team and guests. The closure affects only the Brighton branch, the rest of our branches across the UK are operating as usual.”
The reason for the closure has not been confirmed, it is also uncertain how many staff members will be affected. It’s important to note that businesses and retailers close stores for various reasons, and it doesn’t just mean they are in trouble. Some close because the tenancy has come to an end on the site, or because the branch is not as profitable as others.
This specific Browns branch was the first to open in 1973. The restaurant chain currently has 26 sites across the UK, with branches in London, Bristol, and Cambridge.

In 2013, the restaurant chain celebrated its 40th anniversary, throwing a big birthday party complete with a giant birthday cake supplied by Choccywoccydoodah. An anniversary book, which looked back at the restaurant’s history and shared anecdotes from past and present staff and guests, was also released.
In 2023, the restaurant celebrated its 50th birthday with a £2.5million refurbishment of its West Wnd restaurant in London’s Covent Garden. Other branches to then undergo refurbishments included locations in Cambridge, Exeter, and Southgate.
Despite the closure of the historic site, Mitchells & Butlers – Browns owners – are looking to re-energise the brasserie brand, with openings and conversions in Wilmslow, Exeter, Sutton Coldfield and Bushey Heath.
The Mitchells & Butlers company owns a wide range of hospitality chains, including All Bar One, Miller & Carter, Nicholson’s, Toby Carvery, Harvester, Browns Restaurants, Vintage Inns, Ember Inns, Son of Steak, Stonehouse Pizza & Grill, Crown Carveries, O’Neill’s, Premium Country Pubs, and Sizzling Pubs.
