Autumn is the perfect time for a little staycation to take the sting out of the end of summer and really get into crisp walks, cosy fires and all the beautiful charm that the season brings.

As we put away the picnic blankets and pool toys from summer, out come the woolly jumpers and walking boots with lots of beautiful spots to explore outside this autumn before warming up indoors with a hot drink or next to a roaring fire. Rosy cheeks, Sunday roasts and pub visits are the staples of this season, with Britain doing all three excellently. One of the best quintessentially British getaways for the autumn season has to be a trip to the beautiful historic town of Canterbury.

A stroll through the city’s cobbled streets in the footsteps of Chaucer’s famous pilgrims is not only a trip back through time but also a great way to discover some of the ancient city’s hidden secrets. Visitors have been drawn to Canterbury for almost a thousand years, with the Pilgrim’s Way running through glorious British countryside from Winchester to the city. Highlights include the quirky 16th and 17th century half-timbered houses in the historic centrer as well as the Crooked House bookshop – famous for its unusual lean and a popular spot for tourist snaps. Canterbury Roman Museum houses treasures from the city’s past, including a beautiful mosaic pavement dating from around 300 AD.

As well as the stunning cathedral, charming cafes and rich literary heritage, there is also a lot to do outside the city walls as well. Nearby Blean Woods National Nature offers ample opportunity to blow the cobwebs away with an autumn walk through beautiful woodland. On the outskirts of town Tyler’s Kiln pub is allegedly home to a ghost with staff and punters having experienced spooky goings on for decades.

While The Pig at Bridge Place does not offer any ghosts it is however a quintessential country pub with fireplaces, period features and delicious food – a perfect spot for lunch after working up an appetite stomping through the surrounding countryside – be sure to book ahead.
