Energy experts have named the three worst home appliances that are increasing your energy bills, encouraging pensioners to do this one thing that will save them up to £80.
Pensioners have been urged to save a significant amount of money by tackling the “worst home appliances to leave on standby” and switching them off immediately.
Energy prices remain considerably high across the country, with the average annual household energy bill reaching nearly £2,000. However, there are several ways to cut costs, some of which may seem obvious, but are often overlooked. Although small changes might not seem to make a big difference at first, they can add up over time and lead to noticeable savings. Experts at Eclipse Energy told Birmingham Live: “By turning off these appliances completely instead of leaving them on standby, you can reduce your energy bills significantly as well as your carbon footprint.”
Energy experts have warned state pensioners that they could significantly lower their energy bills simply by ensuring that certain appliances are not left on standby. Standby mode refers to when an appliance remains plugged in with the socket switched on, even when it is not actively in use. Many people don’t realise that some household devices continue to consume electricity even when they appear to be turned off.
Televisions have been named “one of the worst,” as they can consume up to 20 watts of energy when left on standby mode. Over the course of a year, this usage can accumulate, adding an unnecessary cost to energy bills. The experts explained: “If you switch off your TV completely when you’re not using it, you could save around £30 per year on your energy bill.”
Another major spender is satellite TV boxes, including Sky and Virgin Media boxes. These devices also continue to draw power when left on standby, and by switching them off properly, households could save around £20 per year. Gaming consoles, such as Xbox and PlayStation, have also been highlighted as significant energy consumers. When left in standby mode, these devices can use up to 45 watts of energy, making them one of the most costly appliances to leave plugged in unnecessarily. Experts strongly recommend turning them off completely or unplugging them from the wall, revealing that “you could save around £30 per year on your energy bill.”
When adding up all these appliances, along with others that also consume a substantial amount of energy, households could potentially save up to £80 a year – or even more. By making the simple habit of switching them off, these small changes can make a big difference to overall costs.
