One image in a viral TikTok video claims to reveal an insight into your personality and unique traits. What you see in the image is said to tell you if you are logical or intuitive

A viral TikTok video claims to show people what type of person they are by their reaction to a strange optical illusion.

The account @‌psychologylove100 has over 356,000 followers and shared one video that claims to be able to work out if people are “logical or intuitive”. The image in the video is said to appear as three bears appearing for some, but snow capped mountains for others.

“If you’ve seen three bears first, you have an analytical mind,” the video voiceover said. “You’re good at analysing facts and figures and have a logical approach. You don’t act on impulse. You prefer a step-by-step approach to things.”

The video said that logical thinkers are good at solving problems and tend to follow the rules. They may also notice key details others might miss. “When you have the chance, you bring out the most logical arguments and details that others probably fail to grasp,” the video said.

“When given a problem or critical situation, you don’t see a problem as a whole but rather try to break the problem down into distinct concepts, making the situation manageable. You have a keen eye for detail, as evidenced by the fact that you could easily find the three grey bears in the photo.”

Others may be deemed to be intuitive if they don’t see the bears at first. “If you first saw the snow capped mountains, even if you realise later that there are also three bears in the photo, you’re an intuitive thinker,” the voiceover said.

“You follow your inner voice and are rarely disappointed. Your intuitive powers are your most powerful weapon, whether you realise it or not. Even if people insist you to go right, you’ll walk to the left.”

These people, it is claimed, tend to use their gut instinct instead of rules and “may sometimes miss facts” but rely on “past experiences” to them. The voiceover said: “You’re smart enough to interpret the patterns and styles of a particular situation, which means you not only process the available information, but also try to think outside the box… When you have the chance, you bring out the most logical arguments and details that others probably fail to grasp.”

The above should of course be taken with a pinch of salt. The scientific research to suggest that images like this really reveal a person’s personality is thin at best. In reality, what a person sees first in the image is not as likely to reveal anything about a person’s traits more than how they react to daily life.

The Dean McGee Eye Institute said: “There are occasions when the brain is unsure of what it sees. Optical illusions occur when your eyes are presented with colors, lights, patterns, borders or areas of contrast that mislead the brain. It tries to piece together images using optical clues, learned assumptions and past visual experiences. In these cases, there is a difference between the reality of what you see and what your brain thinks you see. As a result, your brain makes a guess and is tricked into seeing something that does not exist, or it struggles to decide between alternating versions of an image.”

Completing challenging puzzles, brainteasers and optical illusions may help improve your cognitive function, boost productiveness and memory, however. Nicole M. Avena, PhD, assistant professor of neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and visiting professor of health psychology at Princeton University said: “While some studies show that brain training games are not effective, the recollection and work that the brain does during these games keeps your mind fresh and alert… Brain functions that you practise during these games—and the repetition of them—can help improve response time and sharpness.”
