Keion White, a 27-year-old defensive lineman for the 49ers, was involved in a shooting in the early hours of the morning after attending the Super Bowl in San Francisco

San Francisco 49ers star Keion White has undergone surgery after being shot just hours after the Super Bowl. White is being treated in hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The 27-year-old attended the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium as a fan to watch Seattle Seahawks beat New England Patriots 29-13 on Sunday. White was then involved in a dispute in the early hours of the morning, with the police called at 4.06am.

The defensive end was shot in the ankle during the altercation inside a business. Officers from the San Francisco Police Department attended the scene and White was treated by paramedics before being sent to a local hospital.

“A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business,” the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. “The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect.”

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains open and active. The San Francisco 49ers said they “will provide further updates when appropriate.”

They signed White in October in a trade with New England Patriots. He made 11 appearances for the 49ers this season, registering 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and three tackles for loss, as they reached the divisional round of the play-offs in the NFC before being beaten by eventual champions the Seahawks.

White attended the Super Bowl to support his former team the Patriots. He posted photos of himself in the stands, including a photo of a message during Bad Bunny’s half-time performance which read: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”.

Shockingly, White is the second 49er to be shot in the last 18 months after Ricky Pearsall. The wide receiver was shot in the chest in August 2024 during an attempted robbery by a 17-year-old.

Pearsall had been signing autographs at an event before the incident in San Francisco’s Union Square. He was targeted for his expensive watch.

“Unfortunately, I revisit that every single night I go to bed,” Pearsall said last year. “I kind of just carry that with me. Now it’s not as much as avoiding it and whether revisiting it or not revisiting it. It’s more about how I deal with it and the light I put on it.

“It’s more a positive light and things I can get out of that, to try to inspire other people. As far as my own personal stuff, I’ve been doing a better job dealing with it, myself.”
