The bags are almost identical, but there’s a huge price difference which could save shoppers thousands of pounds

New Look is stocking a bag that bears a striking resemblance to a designer alternative. Known for its affordable fashion, the high street giant may have just introduced a new crowd-pleaser.

The retailer’s Tan Borg Trim Link Hobo Bag looks similar to a style by high end brand YSL, but at a fraction of the cost. Shoppers can snag the New Look version for £28, while the YSL small Le 5 à 7 suede shoulder bag carries a price tag of £2,065 online.

The bags look almost identical, both featuring a suede-look and shearling trim, gold hardware, adjustable strap and magnetic fastening. However, the designer version is made with real leather, while the high street bag is leather-look.

The two also have similar link details in gold hardware on the front, but the designer bag also features the iconic YSL logo. The New Look bag is slightly larger than the YSL version too.

The New Look product description reads: “Update your seasonal wardrobe with this borg trim hobo bag. Slip the adjustable strap over the shoulder to add the final touch to your layered look.”

The bag has just one review online so far, which reads: “Very on trend bag for AW24/25. Great shape & size. Excellent price too. Can’t wait to use as we move into the change of season. Thanks New Look.”

While the New Look bag is priced at £27.99, the YSL small Le 5 à 7 suede shoulder bag is currently £2,065 at FarFetch. This gives shoppers the chance to save around £2,037 if they opt for the high street alternative.

If you like the suede look but fancy a different style, a number of retailers have options. M&S is stocking the Suede Cross Body Bag for £49.50, as well as the Suede Tote Bag for £130. River Island also has the Brown whipstitch suede shopper bag for £75.

New Look is also stocking the Tan Suedette Saddle Cross-Body Bag for £21.99, which has racked up rave reviews online. One shopper said: “A perfect size casual bag (not too big or too small). A lovely “feel” and natural looking, autumnal colour.

“Adjustable strap for ideal preference length. Inner zip pocket. Press stud opening/closing. Very reasonable price. Value for money. Love this bag.”

A second wrote: “I have been looking for a tan cross body bag with gold hardware for a long time and finally found the perfect one. A great size, not too big or too small, works as a cross body or shoulder bag and looks more expensive than it was. Perfect for every season.”

However, some shoppers pointed out that the bag was not as big as they expected. One said: “Smaller than I expected but still lovely.” Another added: “Small inside but looks good and has adjustable strap.”
