Millions of customers were eligible for the extra £50 from Nationwide

Nationwide Building Society has confirmed the crucial deadline for claiming a £50 bonus payment. The building society distributed a one-off £50 payment to more than 12 million customers last year as part of its Big Nationwide Thank You initiative.

The bonus went out as a gesture of thanks to loyal customers following Nationwide’s successful acquisition of Virgin Money. All eligible payments have now been issued, either paid directly into bank accounts or sent as cheques through the post.

People who received cheques must cash them in by January 1, 2026 to secure their payment. With the final deadline now less than two months away, Nationwide has clarified what happens if customers haven’t cashed their cheques by the new year.

A spokesperson said: “All ‘The Big Thank You’ payments have been made to eligible customers, and all cheques have been sent. Customers must pay in cheques by 1 January 2026 to make sure they don’t miss out on the payment.

“Any enquiries from customers who have been unable to deposit their cheque by 1 January 2026 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.” All other payments were made directly into either a current account, an instant access or a limited access savings account in the eligible customer’s name.

Who was eligible for £50 bonus payment from Nationwide Building Society?

To be eligible for the one-off payment, you need to be a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024. You also had to still be a member when the payments were issued.

In the 12 months to the end of September 2024, members also need to either have had:

  • At least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
  • At least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
  • Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

Another group who were also eligible was those who switched to any Nationwide current account, between July 1 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.
