The coat comes in two lengths and five sizes, with shoppers saying they ‘just had to have’ the ‘flattering’ piece
Whenever I’ve previously purchased a coat, I’ve often gone for plain, block colour so that it will ‘go with more’. However, one patterned statement coat approved by none other than Rochelle Humes has fast become one of the most complimented pieces in my wardrobe – and it’s under £100.
The Chocolate Brown Check Trench Coat , from the former Saturday’s singer’s edit with Next, comes in at £95, and every time I wear it, someone asks where it’s from. In my book, that’s a mark of a standout piece.
Coming in sizes XS to XL, the coat takes a classic silhouette with wide lapels and epaulettes, and updates it with some of this season’s most on trend colours. Featuring a chocolate brown base, the jacket is decorated with a checked pattern in shades of blue, which some may say limits what you can wear it with. To them, I say this: “The coat is the outfit”.
Next has hailed this piece as a ‘bold statement’, and I have to agree. It’s certainly eye-catching but without being too over the top, and actually, is more wearable than you may initially think.
One simple way to wear this coat is with a pair of jeans and a plain t-shirt, with the coat belted at the waist to create more shape, but let the outerwear do the talking. It takes all of the stress out of planning a cohesive look, because it requires minimal styling.
Chocolate Brown Check Trench Coat
Make a bold statement this season in this checked trench coat. Featuring a classic belted waist, wide lapels, and traditional storm flaps, the textured check fabric provides exceptional warmth and style.
One way I’ve really enjoyed wearing the coat is with a simple cream knit – though it would also work with chocolate or taupe – and a brown skirt. It keeps the outfit really tonal and warm, perfect for a sophisticated winter look. I paired the above outfit with a pair of Chocolate Brown Crinkle Effect Leather Signature Underset Heel Knee High Boots, also from Rochelle’s edit for £99.
The coat is exceptionally warm, albeit not weatherproof, so while it’s great for chillier temperatures, it’s not ideal for rainy days. It’s pretty heavyweight, and slightly oversized which allows for shoppers to wear with knitwear without it feeling too bulky. Some shoppers have noted that it’s on the larger side, so have sized down when ordering.
The Next coat is a more affordable alternative to Boden’s Cocoon Wool Coat , which comes in a brown, teal and pink check. Originally £359, it’s currently £251.30 in the sale. It’s made from 56% wool, which some customers may prefer to Next’s polyester offering, however, it has only generated a 3.5 star rating from shoppers, compared to Next’s 4.9 stars.
For a more affordable alternative, Boohoo’s Check Double Breasted Wool Look Coat costs £30. It’s slightly shorter than the others and not as shapely with a boxier fit and no belt, but certainly has a similar appeal for those craving some checks in their outerwear.
Back at Next, customers have hailed the Rochelle Humes coat as ‘warm’, ‘luxurious’ and ‘just the right length’ – though it is available in petite, too. One said: “Love the coat. Warm, feels fantastic. Lined and loved the colours.”
“This is so typical of me, I saw it and I just had to have it,” said another. “It’s luxurious, cosy, colours are complimentary and my mum loves it. A stunning addition to my wardrobe.”
One person wasn’t keen on how the epaulettes sat, leaving a four-star review which read: “Heavyweight good quality coat, but I returned it. It is odd around the shoulders. The epaulettes position seems to make the collar not lie flat. If this doesn’t bother you, it’s a gorgeous super warm coat.”
“Bought this for my mum for Christmas, she loves it. Fits her great, I did size down as it came up a little big,” said one happy customer, while another added: “Lovely warm checked coat. Fits well, true to size and just the right length. Makes a change to my wardrobe from a plain coloured coat.”
And like me, others have had similar reactions when wearing the coat out. “I bought this coat recently and absolutely love it. I am a size 12/14 and bought a Medium which is perfect . It is so cosy without feeling heavy. Have had loads of compliments when I wear it.”
