A bargain hunter shopper thought they’d found an ordinary teddy bear decoration until they discovered a hidden note inside its envelope – and the heartbreaking message left them wondering about its original owner
Everyone hopes to stumble across a bargain while browsing their local charity shop – but one shopper ended up finding something far more valuable hidden inside a second-hand gift. While browsing the shelves, they spotted a teddy bear decoration made to celebrate someone’s 40th birthday. The figurine was holding a small envelope, which they initially assumed was just part of the design.
But after taking a closer look, they realised there was a handwritten note tucked inside. Curious to see what it said, they carefully opened it – only to be left heartbroken by the four simple words written on the tiny piece of paper. Sharing the discovery on Reddit, they wrote: “Found in a local charity shop. I hope whoever wrote this got their wish.”
The handwritten note simply read: “Not to be alone.”
The emotional message quickly struck a chord with thousands of people online, with many admitting it left them feeling heartbroken as they wondered about the original owner and whether their wish had ever come true.
One user said: “Well this snapped my heart in half. Damn.”
Another added: “This hurts my heart. I also struggle with feelings of loneliness at times.
“Two years ago, I wrote an email to be delivered to my future self in 2025, but I can’t quite remember what I put in that email. I know I talked about my hopes and wishes for the future.
“This post reminded me of that. I hope they found the love of a partner, pet, friends or family. We all deserve love and connection.”
A third wrote: “As someone turning 40 very soon – this hit hard.”
However, not everyone believed the note necessarily reflected the owner’s own wish.
One commenter suggested it could have been written from the teddy bear’s perspective instead.
They said: “It is sad, but perhaps think the letter was left as the wish of the bear itself? The bear wants a home and friends after the original owner found fulfilment in life.
“That gives me hope for the original owner. I hope you bought the bear and made that wish come true.”
