Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones are designed to help you hear peripheral noise without compromising on sound quality, and they now have £50 off in Amazon’s Prime Day Deals sale
Although the lighter morning and nights make it safer to be out walking the dog or going for a run, making sure you stay aware of your surroundings is still crucial. Since I love nothing more than listening to a podcast or some music whilst walking the dog, I decided to give the Shokz OpenRun Pro bone conduction headphones a whirl.
While standard headphones or earbuds often cancel out all ambient noise, these promise to maintain awareness of your surroundings while still delivering sound loud enough to keep your energy levels high. If you’re eager to snag a pair for yourself, now’s the perfect time as they’ve been discounted by £50 in the Prime Day sale, dropping from £159.95 to a more affordable £109.

‘I’m a shopping expert and these are my 32 best Amazon Spring Sale deals live today’
Whilst I’m definitely not a born runner, I do love getting out for a long walk with the dog, especially now the spring weather is here. That’s why the Shokz headphones were the perfect pick for me to stay aware of things like traffic, other people and dogs, and even just what my own dog was doing at all times.
After charging them for several hours, I slipped them over my head where they comfortably settled in front of my ears, unlike traditional headphones or earbuds which sit in or on the ears. Despite featuring a strap that goes around the head, they’re virtually unnoticeable when worn due to their lightweight design and positioning, making them surprisingly comfortable. I selected my playlist, paired the headphones with my phone (which worked instantly), and off I went.
I must confess, I thought the ambient noise of the outdoors would completely overpower my music, given it was playing in front of my ears, not inside them. However, I could hear the tunes as clear as day while also being able to detect approaching cars and nearby people without straining to listen.
As a woman, I often feel somewhat vulnerable wearing headphones when I’m out alone, even for a simple dog walk around the block, as it makes me feel disconnected from my surroundings. So, being able to maintain awareness of what’s behind or approaching me definitely enhanced my sense of security, whether it was traffic or people.
Not only did they make me feel more at ease taking my usual route solo, but they also pleasantly surprised me with their comfort, even after prolonged wear. I don’t know about you, but when I’m exercising with AirPods or over-ear headphones, my ears begin to feel sweaty and slightly irritated after a while. Therefore, the fact that these simply rested lightly in front of my ears was a refreshing change.
I was also chuffed with the sound quality, as it was just as clear as using normal earphones and I appreciated the user-friendly controls positioned on the behind-the-ear section, allowing for easy volume changes without having to remove the buds.
The earbuds also boast a generous 10-hour battery life, making them ideal for long distance runners who dont want their tunes cutting out mid-marathon, and they wont require constant recharging after each gym session. With an IP55 rating, these earbuds can brave dust, sweat, and rain, ensuring durability through all sorts of gritty workouts.
Don’t just take my word for it though; Amazon buyers have been heaping praise on these earbuds too, with an impressive average score of 4.5 stars. One satisfied customer reported: “You can run wearing them and they don’t move at all. Comfortable and easy to use, charge easily and last for a long time. You can hear things around you like cars so you are safe but you can hear your music easily. I love them!”
If you’re not a fan of the headband section and want something you can use independently, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds True Wireless Bluetooth In-Ear Headphones, £299, have been highly rated by John Lewis shoppers for their sound quality and comfort, reports OK!.
All things considered, I reckon I’m definitely sold on this style of headphone for when I’m out and about! I’ll likely stick to my usual noise cancelling ones when I’m on public transport or in bustling cities, but for quieter spots and sport, these are certainly the way forward!
