The high street fashion retailer will be closing its decades-old branch in Queensway, Crawley next month on Saturday, November 16

M&S has confirmed the exact date one of its beloved stores will be closing leaving shoppers “angry” and “upset”.

The high street fashion retailer will be closing its decades-old branch in Queensway, Crawley next month on Saturday, November 16. The closest M&S after the closure will be its branch located at Acorn Park. M&S said the decision was made to close the store was down to “changing shopping patterns” but the retailer said it was looking to invest in a new location within the city centre.

Staff working at the M&S store are in discussion with the retailer to find alternative roles within the business. On the closure, Graham Bennett, M&S regional manager, said: “Thank you to all our customers who have shopped at the store – we will continue to work hard serving you at our nearby Acorn Park M&S Food.”

Fans of the iconic M&S location took to social media to share their frustration and upset over the closure. On Facebook, one customer said: “Very angry and upset about this.” Another customer wrote: “I feel sorry for [shoppers] as they love shopping in there … such sad times.”

A third user said: “This is not going to be good for our town. [It was] the only decent shop we had.” While a fourth shopper shared: “Awful decision to close M&S.”

According to a report by Sussex World, the closure was described as “a real blow for the town centre” by Crawley Borough Council leader Michael Jones when it was first announced in March of this year. The closures are part of the upmarket supermarket’s plan to restructure its business and put more focus on its food-only stores.

M&S wants to reduce its “full line” stores from 247 to 180 by 2028 and open 104 more Simply Food shops. On the closures, M&S CEO Stuart Machin said the company will now focus on “making sure we have the right stores, in the right place, with the right space”. M&S has not released a full list of all the stores it has earmarked for closure.
