Fans of cleaning ace Mrs Hinch can’t stop raving about a 80p hack that can prevent condensation forming on your windowsills now that the colder weather has crept in – cutting your chances of getting mould

Condensation can be the first warning sign of mould – but there’s an easy way to stop it.

With freezing temperatures slated to hit parts of the UK in the coming days, it won’t be long until many households start spotting water droplets on their window sills. This occurs when warm and cold air collide, signalling too much humidity in the home and poor ventilation.

Over time, this can lead to mildew and mould which not only look unsightly, but can trigger a whole host of unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, itchy eyes, and runny noses – especially if you’re living with existing respiratory issues or have children in the house. Instead of reaching for the chemical-filled products to try and eliminate the spores and prevent them coming back, it’s important to address the root cause of the problem first.

Taking to a popular Facebook group dedicated to fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, one woman named Kymberley explained that she wakes up every morning to find condensation on her window sills now the colder weather has settled in. “It’s on every window at the front of my house and it’s quite bad,” she complained – stating she didn’t want to purchase a proper dehumidifier for each room in the house.

Straight away, cleaning enthusiasts flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many suggesting leaving windows on the latch all the time to allow airflow into the home. If that doesn’t sound appealing to you (or your energy bill) due to the dreary weather – you could try windowsill dehumidifiers.

“See them £1 or £2 dehumidifiers, they work a treat!” one user wrote, according to the Express. “I had this problem every morning without fail in my two-bedroom apartment and put one of them on every windowsill and it never came back again.”

You can pick up windowsill dehumidifiers from most budget general stores and online retailers for less than £1. For example, Poundland is currently selling a Perfect Scents version for just 80p, which promises to reduce damp, mould, mildew and condensation. If you’re not keen on buying disposable dehumidifier, you could always invest in a proper appliance which could end up saving you money in the long run. Dunelm is currently selling a 12L version for £120, which has a whole range of five-star review – including one customer who says it also helped dry her clothes quicker inside.
